It is believed that Manchester United and Barcelona are finally close to coming to an agreement about the transfer of Dutch international Frenkie de Jong.
With Barcelona playing hardball in their stance, the Red Devils' interest in De Jong has dominated the most of the early trades this summer transfer season. Despite being in a dire financial situation, the Catalan giants have for a long time stood firm in their assessment of their midfielder.
But after weeks of pressure and haggling from United, it appears that the La Liga giants have finally agreed on a sum that will allow De Jong to leave for Old Trafford. United supporters will be extremely pleased with the reported price of £67m with add-ons, given all the circumstances.
The discussions resemble United's pursuit of Jadon Sancho last summer when the England international was still a member of Borussia Dortmund in a startling way. Dortmund had at one point demanded more money than £100 million before they would even consider allowing Sancho to return to Manchester, barely years after they had acquired him from United's nearby rivals City. The Red Devils administration was patient as always and eventually managed to negotiate the transfer fee down dramatically from that triple-digit demand.
Sancho cost United £73 million when he was officially presented as a member of the team shortly after Euro 2020. The ability to bring the price down that far in the board's eyes should be commended, even though it's still unclear whether he has even come close to justifying that sum following a disappointing rookie campaign.
They are about to accomplish the same thing with De Jong, who was once projected to cost roughly £89 million, or about the same as Paul Pogba did six years ago. The ongoing "will he/won't he" signing controversy surrounding the former Ajax player has seriously tried the patience of United supporters.
John Murtough, the director of United, deserves praise for his determination to negotiate with Barcelona for a lower price rather than accepting what the club considers to be an excessive offer.
After weeks of negotiations, it appears that everyone involved in the sale will be rewarded for their work, just as they ultimately were with Sancho. De Jong will be hoping to get off to a slightly faster start than his probable new teammate.
